The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index ended the second quarter of 2025 close to an all-time high. With stocks at high prices, conflict high in parts of the world and the U.S. political landscape polarized among families, neighbors and friends, it may seem like a difficult time to invest.
Historically, there have been many tumultuous events clouding the investing landscape. Every year investors can come up with many reasons to be fearful. However, history shows that avoiding investments during these times does not necessarily pay off. Keeping a long-term view, focusing on personal financial goals and working with a financial advisor to make sure you are well positioned to meet those goals can help mitigate noise from headlines and lead to solid success.
The chart below from “Why Should I Invest In the Stock Market Now?” issued by Franklin Templeton, highlights major current events during the past 30 years. Over the same 30 years, $10,000 originally invested in the S&P 500 Index on December 31, 1974, grew to $3,422,051 on December 31, 2024. There were many headlines over those years that could deter investors. Don’t let today’s headlines deter you from long-term financial goals.
